The Music of Chance by Paul Auster

His life is in control, but then he gets an inheritance. He becomes a restless driving nomad, and Nashe can’t seem to settle anywhere. He flits around the US until he meets a gambler and then in a moment of insanity he takes a huge risk and his life is transformed.

Auster provides a glimpse of an underworld of abnormality that is frightening because it just might be real. A great read.
