The Inheritance of Loss by Kiran Desai


Set in a time of conflict in Kalimpong, a Himalayan hill station, in North West Bengal, India, this focuses on the lives of a judge and his Anglicised granddaughter. Although Indian, the judge is a colonial man and he and his daughter frown on the habits of the Indian and Nepalis about them.

The two struggle with their changing world and they are caught in the middle of the local struggle for an independent Gorkhaland.

Also struggling in a changing world is their cook whose son has emigrated to America to make his fortune, but only to return a broken man.
