The Birth of Venus by Sarah Dunant

It is time for austerity and change. The monk Savonarola is starting to exert his iron rod on the liberal society of the Medici. A young woman  and her painter lover are forbidden to love and she is married off to an older man.

Some good description in this romance, which is predictable in part but is readable.
